Tonight was senior night, and 9 Lady Eagles were honored for their years of dedication and effort to the Lady Eagles program: Addie Burlison, Holland Guisler, Hannah Koop, Kyelie Marquis, Kristin Mentzer, Leah Phelps, Kinsey Tindol, Montse Torres, and Jenna Wolford were all honored before tonight’s tipoff. After the tip, the Lady Eagles were all business, with a slow start for both the Lady Eagles and Coyotes, the teams picked up the pace and forced an overtime game. With a close call at the end of the game, the Lady Eagles were able to pull out the 61-59 overtime victory!
After the seniors were honored, the Lady Eagles took the floor against the 15-10 Coastal Alabama Community College Coyotes. After a very slow first quarter for the Lady Eagles, they found themselves down 21-11 early to the Coyotes. As the second quarter commenced, the Lady Eagles got down even further early in the second. With a deficit of 15 points, the Lady Eagles had a lot of work to do in the remaining 28 minutes of play. With a battle back in the second quarter, the Lady Eagles entered halftime down by nine (the largest halftime deficit since January 20th).
After it took nearly 4-minutes to score in the third quarter, the Lady Eagles 9 point deficit turned to 13 points after yet another slow quarter start for the Lady Eagles. However, a 14-6 run by the Lady Eagles to close the third quarter they found themselves only down 3 with just one final frame remaining… or so they thought. After regaining the lead just 4 minutes into the fourth quarter the Lady Eagles felt alive again! With four lead changes and three ties in the fourth quarter, the game could not be determined without an overtime period. The overtime period began with a Leah Phelps bucket, while this bucket did mean a lot for the game… quite possibly this bucket meant more for Leah, with this basket, Leah Phelps became the new All-Time leader in points scored for the Lady Eagles with 1,604 points! With the team feeling good about the broken record for their senior teammate, this momentum carried the Lady Eagles to their 22nd victory of the season with a 61-59 overtime win over the Coyotes.
While Leah Phelps stole the show with her new All-Time scoring record, she also became the All-Time leader in steals with 247 total career steals! Following Leah’s All-Time performance, freshman Sky Boyd cashed in a game-high 17 points while also grabbing 6 rebounds and 2 steals. With another well-rounded performance, Kyelie Marquis recorded 11 points along with 8 rebounds and 5 assists in her 29 minutes played. With her 9th double-digit rebound performance of the season Montse Torres grabbed 11 rebounds while still scoring 7 points in tonight’s Lady Eagle victory.
