Eagles Women’s Basketball vs. Southern University of New Orleans

Entering tonight’s game with a 10-1 record, the Lady Eagles looked to close their first semester of play with a big win over Southern University at New Orleans. After a slow first quarter, the Lady Eagles were able to turn in their 11th win of the season and their 10th win in a row with a 76-58 victory over the SUNO Lady Knights.
 
Due to the Lady Knights grabbing 5 offensive rebounds and shooting 46% from the field in the first quarter, the Lady Eagles found themselves down at the end of the first 21-25. As the second quarter began the Lady Eagles quickly jumped on a 5-0 run and reclaimed the lead inside the first minute and a half of play. With SUNO still battling back, they retook the lead by four with a 5-0 run of their own. With the second quarter being closely contested, the Lady Eagles ultimately claimed a 40-35 lead going into the break.
 
After the quarter opened with a Jenna Wolford three-pointer, the Lady Eagles were off and running. Outscoring the Lady Knights 17-9 in the third quarter and forcing 5 turnovers, the Lady Eagles commanded a 13-point lead entering the final frame. While SUNO only shot 2-16 (12.5%) from the field in the quarter, the Lady Knights converted all 8 of their free throw attempts in the 4th quarter. While the Lady Eagles still outscored SUNO 19-14 in the 4th quarter, the last 10 minutes were hard fought for both sides. As the game progressed, senior Jenna Wolford led the Lady Eagles in scoring for the fifth time this season with 27 points on 10-22 FG shooting and 7-13 from behind the arc while also swiping 5 steals. With her second-highest scoring performance of the season, Leah Phelps recorded 16 points on 5-9 shooting. After a scoreless game against Belhaven University, Montse Torres helped lead tonight with her second double-double of the season with 12 points and 11 rebounds!
