After an overtime loss on January 20th, the Lady Eagles wanted their revenge against Toccoa Falls College. With each of the four quarters being decided by less than 5 points, this game was a thriller from start to finish. With the Lady Eagles ultimately pulling out the victory 68-66, they reached their 19th win of the season and their fifth straight victory.
With the first possession of the game resulting in a steal and layup for the Lady Eagles, they jumped out to an early 2-0 lead. With six lead changes in the first quarter, the TFC Screaming Eagles held a 17-16 lead at the end of the first. After a made jump shot from Kristin Mentzer in the second quarter, the Lady Eagles regained the lead and never gave it up for the remainder of the half. With 10 points in the second quarter, Kristin Mentzer went 3-3 from the field and 3-4 from the FT line leading the Lady Eagles into halftime with a 39-35 lead.
As the teams came out of the halftime break, the Lady Eagles once again controlled the quarter never losing the lead and growing their lead to six after a free throw from freshman Sky Boyd. To close the third quarter, neither team scored a point for the final three minutes of the game with only 2 TO in those three minutes… the teams combined for an 0-14 close to the third quarter. Immediately to start the fourth quarter, TFC took their 1-point deficit and turned it quickly into a 5-point lead inside the first minute of the fourth quarter. Calm and composed, the Lady Eagles fought back and regained the lead with 5:48 left in the game. With three lead changes in the last five minutes, Toccoa was fighting while Pensacola was trying to hang on to their home victory. With 14 seconds left on the game clock, the Lady Eagles had a three-point lead and a sideline out of bounds. After an unfortunate turnover and bucket, that three-point lead shrunk to one in just 3 seconds… After two successful inbounds and two trips to the FT line, the Lady Eagles were able to pull out the 68-66 victory over the #2 ranked team in the nation, Toccoa Falls College.
Offensively, the Lady Eagles were led by senior Leah Phelps who turned in a 23-point performance on 10-18 FG shooting while dishing out 4 assists. With an extremely efficient game, Kristin Mentzer recorded 15 points on 5-6 FG shooting and 2-2 shooting from behind the arc. Although Kyelie Marquis and Montse Torres only combined for 2 points, they did combine for 23 rebounds (Kyelie-12, Montse-11).
