On the hunt for their sixth straight season with 20+ wins and their 20th program win over the Lady Bruins, the Lady Eagles hosted South Region rival Bob Jones University. After a blistering start, the Lady Eagles were dominant from the tip. Outscoring the Lady Bruins by 31 points, the Lady Eagles achieved their 20th victory of the season and their 20th program victory over BJU by a final score of 93-62.
After the first plays of the game resulted in a made three-pointer and a forced turnover, the Lady Eagles were out of the gate early. After a quick 5-0 run to open the game, the game remained tight throughout the first three and a half minutes… with an 11-7 lead for PCC with 6:35 left in the first quarter the Lady Eagles kicked it into high gear! Outscoring the Lady Bruins 18-5 to close out the quarter, the Lady Eagles commanded a 29-12 lead at the end of the first quarter. Going 5-9 from 3PT land and forcing 12 TO in the first quarter, the Lady Eagles opening 10 minutes were a beauty. The second quarter brought more of the same… outscoring BJU 22-12 in the second, forcing 10 TO, and hitting 3 threes the Lady Eagles entered the half with a 51-24 lead.
Although the third quarter was much closer, the Lady Eagles were still able to outscore the Lady Bruins 22-19. With both teams going 4-10 from the 3PT line, the Lady Eagles narrowly escaped the third quarter with a three-point lead. While the fourth quarter once again remained close, the lead established in the first half by the Lady Eagles allowed this rivalry matchup to end in a 31-point victory for the Lady Eagles by a final score of 93-62. While scoring was evidently a large part of today’s game, with the Lady Eagles recording their second-highest scoring performance of the season, the Lady Eagles’ defense was the show-stopper! Forcing 36 turnovers, swiping 21 steals, and outrebounding the Lady Bruins 49-40 the defensive half of the floor produced energy needed on the offensive end.
With some impressive stat lines in today’s game, Kristin Mentzer led the team in scoring with 23 points on 8-19 shooting and being 1 rebound short of her fourth double-double of the season. Closely behind was Jenna Wolford with 20 points, 5 rebounds, and 5 steals going 6-10 from behind the arc. Off the bench, Sky Boyd recorded 18 points with 7-11 FT shooting and 1-1 from 3PT land. With 23 minutes played and zero points scored Kyelie Marquis still found herself to be one of the most useful pieces in today’s win… in today’s game, Marquis dished out 11 assists and now finds herself tied in the All-Time record books with the most assists in a single game by a Lady Eagle!
